    Social Studies

    We are working on Chapter 15, Medieval Europe. For this chapter, and to finish up the year, each student will create a project/presentation as their assessment. These projects/presentations will be presented to parents and other sixth graders at our Medieval Faire on Monday, June 6, from 12:15-1:30. An invitation will be sent out to parents soon. Each student or partnership will need a trifold presentation board or $4.00 for me to buy one for them by Friday.


    We finished reading Chapters 8 & 9 about Ancient Rome. We will not take chapter tests on these chapters. We worked on the vocabulary and took quizzes on the contents of the chapter. We are moving on to Medieval Europe.


    We have just finished reading all of the material about Ancient Greece (Chapters 4 & 5). We will finish our pocket activities. These pockets will be used as the assessment for Chapters 4 & 5. Next, we will move on to learning about Ancient Rome (Chapters 8 & 9).


    Students are very excited to be starting our study of Ancient Greek civilization. We have just completed the first section in Chapter 4. Many of the students are very familiar with some aspects of the Greeks (like the gods and goddesses) because of reading the Percy Jackson series "The Lightning Thief." So far, we have just touched on the beginning of the civilization. We will be completing an in-class project with "pockets" of information on different topics that will be ongoing throughout the next few chapters. They may have an occasional mini-activity that they need to complete at home, but will not have a major project for this unit.


    We just finished Chapter 2, which is all about the Ancient Egyptian civilization. Students really enjoyed this chapter, and had lots of things to share. They performed some Egyptian skits in groups that helped them to see how many of the customs and government fit into daily life of these people.


    We will be briefly covering the Israelites next. For this section, we will be reading the sections and having quizzes, but will have a project for the assessment of the chapter. This is a project that the students will get this Friday and it will be due the following Friday. It is mostly written, and you should see your child working on it at home. When we come back from break, we will begin the Ancient Greek culture.


    This year, you will be learning about World History. Our textbook is called "Journey Across Time: The Early Ages" and will start back in prehistoric times. We will study Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Rome, and Medieval Times. This is very different from the social studies that you have studied so far about the United States. We will also work on map skills, time lines, and other necessary geography and history skills.


    So far, we have studied the Stone Age, including the Paleolithic and Neolithic ages. We have learned about the importance of fire and the farming revolution in man's survival. We watched a movie about "Otzi the Iceman," whose body was discovered in 1991. We saw how the scientists figured out and learned about his life. The students were very excited about Otzi!


    We studied the civilizations in Mesopotamia, and students traveled through 6 stations, reviewing our third section about the Assyrians and Chaldeans. We have just finished the first chapter, and after a review Jeopardy game on Monday, we will be having our Chapter 1 Test on Tuesday.


    We are about half way through Chapter 2, which is about Ancient Egypt. This focuses on the Old Kingdom, Middle Kingdom, and New Kingdom. The students are really enjoying learning about and discussing mummies and pyramids, and working with hieroglyphics. They had a great time in the computer lab doing a cartoon simulation of the mummification process. You can get to the link off of the district web page under history, then Egypt. The site to do the simulation is called "Create a Mummy." Try it out! They also enjoyed another website called "Pyramid Builder."


    Below is a link to the social studies website that goes along with our book. It is a great resource, especially for reviewing for a test. I took the students to the computer lab, and we went through the website so that they could see what is available. There are review games, vocab flashcards, etc. It is a fun and valuable resource. Try it out!
