Each child is responsible for reading at least 4 books on the 2012 Rebecca Caudill book list. Some kids are required to read a few more. There are 20 books of all reading and interest levels on the list and many of them are wonderful books! There will be a small assignments that goes along with 3 of the books read. Those assignments will be due January 31, 2012. We talk about those books immediately in class so all kids have enough time to complete this reading assignment.
Starting in October, I'll be requiring the kids to write a bi-monthly blog entry. I've got the checklist on the blog already. I have a sample blog entry on
, a book I finished over the weekend. I'm encouraging the children to respond to other kids' blogs as well. Here's the link!
Firegirl was about a girl named Jessica who was burned in a car accident fire. She moves to a new school and the kids don’t know how to act around her. The main character, Tom, actually ends up being somewhat decent to her. Jeff, the main character’s best friend, is a total mean guy. Jeff’s homelife is a wreck so I understand a little, but he is super super mean to Jessica in a way that made me uncomfortable. I think the character development was really poor because I felt like I didn’t know the characters really well by the end of the book. I wonder how it felt to be Jessica. How could she handle a new school and mean classmates?
Purpose – To easily chat about our books in a safe format. We can also communicate with kids in other classes that are reading the same book. Awesome!
