Welcome back! I hope that everyone had a relaxing break from school! I had a wonderful time with family. Both of my kids came home, and I babysat my son's puppy for a few days while he went to New York City for New Year's Eve! I think the puppy exhausted me more than the holidays:)

We will have our winter MAP Testing this Wednesday (1/4--Reading) and next Tuesday (1/10--Math).

This week is our last before winter break. We will have a celebration with all students who choose on the last day before break (Friday, Dec. 16). We will have a pizza party with an extended lunch time. Students who would like to participate should bring $1.00 per pizza slice that they would like to order (up to 4 slices) and a drink. Students are also welcome to bring in treats to share with the class at that time as well.

Then, at the end of the day, we will have the Friday free time cookie decorating party for those who earned it in the months of Nov/Dec. This trimester, to earn the Friday Free Time, students needed to have less than 4 letters (Hs or Rs) for the month (or combined months in this case).

This week is a short week (a full day on Monday and a half day on Tuesday.) We combined last week's Friday folder sheet with this short week, so graded papers and pink sheet will come home on Tuesday. Enjoy your family time and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Monday is Halloween! Students may wear costumes that are school appropriate (no weapons, blood, etc.) They may also bring in cookies, candy, or other treats for our celebration at the end of the day.

Tuesday is our field trip to Rollins Savannah. Remember a sack lunch, appropriate clothing for the weather, and sturdy shoes.

It was great meeting with all of you to discuss your child's strengths and goals to work toward during the rest of the school year. You will be receiving a copy of those goals in a parent letter coming home (probably not until next week, since Mrs. Jacobs and I are gone at the end of this week). Each student will also post their goals in their locker, so that they will have a daily reminder. We will sign up for February conferences some time after the start of the new year.

Each of you should have received a field trip permission slip (blue). Remember to sign the first two pages and send them back. We need lots of chaperones, so if you're up for a chilly walk to the Rollins Savanna, please join us.

This Thursday and Friday, Mrs. Jacobs and I will be in Springfield at the ICTM Conference (Illinois Council for Teachers of Mathematics). We will be going to workshops about the new Common Core Standards and will learn lots of new strategies for teaching your child math. Because we will be gone, there will be no pink sheet coming home this Friday. Then, you will receive a sheet for two weeks the following Friday.

I can't wait to meet all of you (some for the second time) at conferences. Conferences for our team are on Tuesday, October 4, from 3:00-5:15, and then again on Thursday, October 6, from 1:00-8:00. Students do not need to attend this conference (they will run a student-led conference in the spring). You should have received a confirmation with your conference time. If you didn't receive a confirmation, or if you can no longer attend at the scheduled time, please email me at batson.jill@d46.org.

Thanks to those of you who attended our Back to School night. We enjoyed meeting all of you. If you were unable to attend, your child should have brought home the green handout in their Friday folder. If you have any questions, please feel free to email or call.

We are finished with MAP testing, and will get back into our usual schedule and routine. Students are doing a nice job of adjusting to storing their supplies in their lockers instead of their desks.

We had a great start to our school year. The students on our team worked together to brainstorm different characteristics of working together on a team (based on a bag with some small items inside). They were very creative!

We played a Starburst game, and students shared information about themselves, families, pets, vacations, school, etc., based on the Starbursts that they chose from a giant bowl. They are currently working on Personality Spheres, a 3-d shape made from their answers to different personal questions.

We had a team "Teacher Pleasing Behavior Boot Camp," where students spent 5 minutes at each station practicing things like checking out a classroom book, putting a correct heading on a paper, getting supplies from a list from their locker, reading the board and following directions, cleaning up after themselves, etc.

We also rotated through our SOAR (our school behavior program) stations to learn appropriate behaviors in different areas of the building.

On Friday, students got their schedules, and we did a shortened version of our classes. New 6th graders have to get used to getting supplies out of their lockers in the halls between classes (we no longer have desks that open, so everything is stored in their locker). If you didn't buy a locker shelf, I strongly recommend it. It really helps with organization.

This upcoming week will be our first full week. We will get into our class routines, with a regular schedule (except on MAP testing days). Our team will take our Reading MAP testing on Wed, Aug. 31. We will have our Math MAP test on Wed, Sept. 7.

Hopefully, students are filling in their assignment notebooks, but if you ever need to check, all of our homework is listed on our team 6-3 wiki page (you can click on a link below to get there.)

Welcome to my class! I'm so excited to meet all of you and start a new year. Check back on this wiki page periodically. The most recent information will always be added at the top.

I teach LA/Lit to our team, and I also teach Pre-Algebra. The other teacher on our team is Mrs. Jacobs. She teaches both science and social studies to our team, and she also teaches a math class.

I hope you had a great summer and are ready to come back and start fresh with a new school year. Don't worry if you don't know anyone in our class. We'll do lots of "getting to know you" activities, so you'll meet lots of new friends.

Please come prepared with all of the school supplies on our list. Another suggestion I have is a locker shelf. In sixth grade, we don't have desks that open, so everything is kept in your locker. Buying the metal locker shelf is really helpful in staying organized. I have seen them at Office Max, and I'm sure they have them at other places with the school supplies.
