Hoops for Heart:
Every year, we do our Hoops for Heart basketball tournament during PE class. Along with the tournament, we give the students an opportunity to raise money for the American Heart Association in the form of a fund raiser. The fundraiser is optional, though everyone will be participating in the tournament since it is part of our basketball unit. The permission slip on the collection envelope is not needed since we are doing the tournament during the school day and during PE class. The final games of the tournament will be played on the 2/15 for 6th grade and 2/16 for 5th grade; parents are more than welcome to come and cheer on your team!
For the fundraiser, students can win prizes based off of the amount of money they raise for the American Heart Association. Money raised goes to fighting heart disease and stroke. Students are encouraged to ask family members and family friends for donations (this is not a door to door fundraiser!). Parents, help your students by taking the donation envelope to work! You can also help your students start an online donation site so friends and family on your email lists can donate as well (see the
Hoops for Heart website for more details). Our goal is for every student to raise at least $10 so we can give a $7500 check to the American Heart Association. All donations are due by 2/16.

Grade Breakdown:
For 5th grade students, earning a letter grade in PE will be new to them this year. Grading in physical education is a bit different than in a regular classroom. All students start with 100%. As long as they participate to the best of their ability, show good behavior in class, come prepared to class (gym shoes), and turn in their completed homework assignments on time, then they will remain at 100% for the trimester. Students can lose points based on the grading scale listed below. For example, if a student forgets to bring their gym shoes to class, they would lose 3% of their grade for the day. However, if they forget their gym shoes on a day that we're doing the mile run, they lose 3% for not being prepared for class and 60% for not being able to participate (we do not allow students to run in shoes that are not safe). This would only drop their trimester grade by 1%, which is not bad unless they continuously are not able to participate.
Grading Scale: Participation/Effort - 60% Behavior - 25% Activity Assignments - 12% Prepared for Class - 3%
Medical Note:
If your child is unable to participate in PE for a medical reason, please send a note with them to class. We allow students to miss up to 2 days of PE with a note from a parent/guardian without affecting their grade. If your child needs to be out of PE for an extended period, please provide a note from a doctor. This will not affect their grade. When getting a doctor's note, please ask the doctor to list what your child can and cannot do. Obviously, a child with a broken leg cannot participate, but a child with a less severe injury, like a broken finger, can at least participate in some of the activities that we do. The students would rather be participating than sitting on the sidelines watching their friends have fun. Thank you in advance for your help.
Second Trimester Homework:
During this trimester, students must complete 20 points worth of activities. You can choose to do two 10-point activities, one 10-point and two 5-point activities, or four 5-point activities. The 10-point activities are either more time consuming or are more difficult than the 5-point activities. You have all trimester to complete them, but we recommend that you get them done sooner than later. Regardless of how many activities you do, please turn them all in at the same time to the mailbox in the gym. Remember, 12% of your grade in PE is based off of homework. If you have any questions about the activities, please see your PE teacher. See the "Homework Description" and "Traditional Activity Assignment" attachments below for more details.
Homework will be due no later than February 24th!!
