We just finished Chapter 5, which dealt with solving and graphing inequalities. We also practiced solving multi-step equations. We are starting Chapter 6. This is a longer chapter that deals with Ratios and Proportions.
The students in our class just graduated from the Biz Wiz program! They really enjoyed practicing making investment decisions for their teams. They were excited about it, and they really learned a lot! Thanks to the parents who "worked" at our investment firm each class day. We couldn't have done it without you!
We have finished Chapter 4 and will start Chapter 5. During this chapter, we will also be doing a unit called "Biz Wiz." This relates different math skills to the stock market, and gives students a chance to apply many of the skills that they've learned in a real-life situation. It discusses the vocabulary of economics, and students will be able to simulate a stock exchange environment. We will alternate the Chapter 5 work and the Biz Wiz work throughout the week. Look for the letter coming home explaining Biz Wiz in more detail.
Chapter 5 deals with Perimeter and Area, Inequalities, and Equations with variables on both sides.
We are now working on Chapter 4 (which we will finish before winter break). Chapter 4 is where we really begin using algebra. Students are working on combining like terms, solving simple equations with all operations, and using properties like the distributive property. They are catching on quickly and doing very well. The biggest challenge for them at this point is keeping track of negative signs and computation within equations. We will take our Chapter 4 test the Friday before winter break.
We have finished our first 2 chapters, and we are now working on Chapter 3. Chapter 3 has some review of fractions, but also includes new information using computation with negatives, and also applying the fraction computation rules to algebra. We are doing this chapter in a different compacted way. Students are working at their own pace (within a time frame). Students are working a little bit each day on multiple lessons. All work for Chapter 3 is due this Thursday. The Chapter 3 Test will be on Friday.
We have finished reviewing computation with decimals and fractions. We began our first chapter which is called "Tools for Algebra." We are jumping right into expressions and variables. Students will also be updating a glossary with all of the new math terms for that chapter. They will need to be familiar with those terms at the end of the chapter for the test. They seem really excited to be challenging themselves!
Welcome to Pre-Algebra! You are going to learn a lot of new math this year!
I hope that you have been working on your summer math packet that you got at the end of 5th grade. Do a little at a time, and don't save it until the last minute!
Below you will find a list of supplies you will need on a daily basis for success in math class this year:
pencil with eraser your textbook red correcting pens 2 spiral notebooks & 1 folder a scientific calculator! (YOU MUST HAVE ONE--we will use it a lot)
You will also need the following at various times throughout the year (leave in locker):
ruler protractor graph paper
Your textbook is the Glencoe Pre-Algebra book (it was used for the first time last year.) We will be following the textbook, but also using a variety of other materials to learn our topics. Before chapter 1, we will review to make sure that you are comfortable with fractions, decimals, and all of the operations. In this course, it is assumed that you know all of your basic facts, and that you are comfortable with multi-digit operations.
Everyone in this course has been successful in math (and it has usually come pretty easy to you). In this course, almost all of the information taught will be new to you. You will need to work at it and practice in order to be successful, and for many of you this is the first time you will have had to do that. It may seem overwhelming at times, but I hope that you will ask questions in class while we work through problems together. I really enjoy teaching this higher level math to sixth graders, and they are usually very successful!
You will also always have a night of homework to practice the concept before you have a second assignment that is graded. After the first assignment, we will check it together in class, so that you can ask questions or figure out whether you understand the concept well. It is your responsibility to let me know that you need help. See below to find out when we could meet to get help. As long as you communicate with me, I'll do everything I can to help you!
Throughout the year, we will focus on problem solving strategies. You will have a few daily problems to complete at the beginning of each class. On most homework assignments, the new concept will be applied to some type of story problem or real life experience. You will also complete a certain number of logic problems and other fun puzzles independently each quarter.

I
am always available to help you with any questions you have. However,
you have to ask for help if you need it. You can get help during class
work time, during your study hall time (just ask your teacher if you
can come to see me), during morning work time in your homeroom, or
before school (most days from 8:00-8:30 am). On some days, you can also
get help during your lunch period. I will meet with you as often as you
need to in order to help you achieve your goals in math.
