Welcome to my LA/Lit class!
We just finished Unit 2 in our text, and will begin class novels. We will focus on characterization and making inferences and reflections about what the characters are feeling, etc. We are also studying many different types of figurative language and will be looking for the authors use of these in our novels.
We are currently working on our Egypt novels. Students had a choice of 3 novels. They will be working on vocabulary, inferencing, predicting, summarizing, and other skills with these novels. They will be working in a small group with other students who chose the same novel that they did.
These novels also connect with much that they have learned in their studies of ancient Egypt in Social Studies. All work for the Egypt novels will be due by the end of class on Monday, November 21. After Thanksgiving, we will go back to our textbook series and start Unit 2.
We are working on our second section of the unit right now. In the first unit, our spelling dealt with short vowel sounds. In grammar, we studied fragments vs. sentences, and also different types of sentences and their end punctuation. Our vocabulary strategy was studying multiple meaning words. For the second section, we are working on it over 2 weeks, because we had a short week and also had MAP testing. We will finish it this week.
In spelling, we studied words with long vowel sounds. Our vocabulary strategy is compound words. This week in grammar, we will study subject and predicate. We have begun working on a personal narrative and will finish our rough drafts this week. We are trying to incorporate the 5 senses into our personal narratives as well.
We started readers' workshop last week, and students enjoyed sharing what is going on in their independent reading book with their groups.
I will be teaching LA/Lit to all of the students on our team. I hope that you've been reading a lot of great books over the summer. Don't forget to read your summer reading novel that you were given at the end of fifth grade. If you lost it, stop in to the Frederick School office to get a new one.
One of my favorite pastimes is reading. I have a huge selection of different books in my classroom library which you will be welcome to check out. We will be doing a lot of reading in class, and you will always be reading an independent novel choice for our daily Readers' Workshop.
I love reading a variety of genres and lengths of books and stories. We will work out of our "Treasures" textbook for some reading, and all of our spelling, grammar, and writing. In between each full unit in "Treasures" (about every 6-8 weeks), we will read class, group, or independent novels.
We will also be working on building your elaboration and structure in writing. You will have the opportunity to write many different pieces that you may not have tried before in addition to improving those types that are familiar to you.
I will be updating this wiki during the school year, so check back periodically to see rubrics, read about what we've been doing in class, etc. The most recent information will always be added at the top.
