Please bring all necessary materials to class everyday. These include: notebook, pencil, pen, folder, and all handouts given in class during the unit we are currently studying. You will not need to bring your textbook to class every day. I will tell you when you need to bring it to class. Please keep it in your locker so you can access it quickly when needed.
TEXTBOOK INFORMATION :
Textbook Title: United States History
Publisher: Holt
Your textbook is available online. Here are the steps to access:
go to my.hrw.com
you now will be at a login screen
username: allclasses2
password: f3b6
You are responsible for your textbook. I have checked a textbook out to you with a specific number. This textbook must come back to me at the end of the year. Failure to do so will result in you being billed for a new book. At this point, I am not sure what the cost is. Failure to pay for a new book might result in your academic record and report card being held from the high school until the bill is paid. It is best to keep your textbook at school in your locker so it does not get lost. Please remember that your textbook is available online for viewing at home.
GRADING POLICIES:
Please continue to check PowerSchool to keep yourself updated on grades. Students and parents/legal guardians each have usernames and passwords to PowerSchool. If you and your parents/legal guardians do not have a username and password, please contact the school's main office at (847) 223-3680. They will mail the information to the mailing address on file at the school.
Progress reports will be given out halfway (at the end of 6 weeks) through each trimester. These come in the progress report/report card envelopes. These will need to be signed by parents/legal guardians and returned to me. Periodically, other progress reports will be given to students. However, it will be your responsibility to keep yourself updated with your grades. I will post on this website and announce in class when grades have been updated.
If students need help, I am available during study hall (5th period) or team time (8th period).
The Grayslake Middle School grading scale will be used for this class.
90%-100% A
80%-89% B
70%-79% C
60%-69% D
Below 60% F
Generally, if a student is absent on the day of a test or quiz, the test or quiz is made up the day the student returns to class. In extreme cases of absences, tests and quizzes missed are made up within a couple of days of the student absence. This helps to give more immediate feedback to all students regarding tests and quizzes. Further, it helps you to stay focused, learn the material, and keep it fresh in your mind for the test. In-class notes are posted online on this website each day. It is your responsibility to check these if you are absent so you can be updated with the class content. Also, it is best to check with a member of your class period to see if there are additional notes or material that might not be posted online.
Students are graded on participation in class each trimester. Participation points include, but are not limited to, produces work to ability, completes work on time, coming prepared for class, actively listening and participating, and staying on task. These criteria are listed in the "P and G Section" of the District 46 Report Card.
Extra credit is virtually non-existent for this class. You receive the grade you earn. Yes, you earn your grades based on the work you produce on tests and other assessments. Always do your best! I will determine if there is a need for extra credit.
FINAL EXAMS:
A comprehensive mid-term will be given halfway through the school year. Likewise, a comprehensive final exam will be given at the end of the school year. These are very similar to high school final exams. Both will be comprehensive for each half of the year. For example, the test in January will cover information presented from August to January. The second exam will be comprehensive from January through May/June. Dates for these are mid-January and late-May or early-June.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
Giving or receiving information (i.e. cheating) on a test, quiz, assessment is grounds for failure for both parties involved. If I suspect cheating, I will issue you and others involved a warning. If it is blatant cheating, you and other parties involved will receive a zero on the test, quiz, or assessment. Please do your own work.
Plagiarism (passing the work, research, ideas, etc. of someone else off as your own) is also grounds for failure. Do your own work in your own words. If you are going to use direct quotes, research, ideas, etc., please cite your sources.
ATTENDANCE:
Regular in-class attendance is extremely important to learning and understanding. If you are going to be gone for an extended period of time, please let me know. I can, if possible, get you some information and handouts ahead of time so you can be updated with the class. You will need to check this website for the in-class notes/discussions that were had during your absence. Papers, packets, other handouts passed out during class will not be posted here. It is your responsibility to get these papers, packets, and other handouts either before your absence or upon your return. You can get these from me or the folder located in the front of the classroom.
Unexcused absences can result in a zero being issued for work or tests that are due the day you are unexcused.
You need to be in the classroom ready to begin when the class period begins. Please refer to your schedule for times when the class begins.
You will also need to let Mrs. Lubrich, attendance secretary, in the office know of your absence.
BEHAVIOR:
Students are expected to act as a young adult in this class as, more than likely, they will be going to high school next school year. Students MUST come prepared to learn, take notes, prepare for tests, etc. Students need to treat each other, the class, the surroundings, etc. with the respect they deserve. Being a mature and positive individual is the key to success in this class. We will discuss this further in class.
CURRENT UNIT OF STUDY DESCRIPTION:
The fifteenth unit of study will discuss the Vietnam War. A brief overview will be given.
ACADEMIC VOCABULARY:
In this class, you will need to be able to define and apply some specific vocabulary words from the D46 grade 8 social studies academic vocabulary list. These words relate to U.S. and world history. This will be done through a variety of means including tests, primary source document work, in-class discussions, etc. Some vocabulary terms associated with unit 15: (please note that some words are not necessarily on the D46 academic vocabulary list)
IN-CLASS NOTES:
I will attempt to post notes from class each day. I can not guarantee this; however. This is why it is important that you take good notes in class and have a friend that can help you if you are absent from class. These notes are to help you and to use if you are absent from class and are in no way to be used in place of regular in-class note taking.
Papers, packets, other handouts passed out during class will not be posted here. It is your responsibility to get these papers, packets, and other handouts. You can get these from me or the folder located in the front of the classroom.
